Don’t panic – DON’T PANIC – but WhatsApp was down.

AAAAAGH.

Many users found that their messages just weren’t sending, instead perpetually showing the ‘clock’ symbol next to pending messages.

Others were faced with an endless ‘loading’ message when they opened the app.

According to DownDetector, the issue affected users all over the UK and mainland Europe, as well as parts of the US and South America.

Many people are still waiting for the app to start working again – although service has now returned for most accounts.

Naturally, as people tend to do when an app they actually use goes down, everyone dusted off their Twitter accounts to talk about it.

A spokesperson for WhatsApp told Metro.co.uk: ‘We experienced a brief outage but are back up and running now.’
